Welsh Ignorant of IP issues

The level of awareness of Intellectual Property (IP) rights in Wales and England is low, according to a research study by IP Wales.

Findings have indicated that this lack of awareness has affected the level of investment in Welsh SMEs with a significant portion of venture capitalists being unwilling to invest in companies that do not have adequate IP strategy dealing with the promotion, protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights.

To bridge the gap between legislation and awareness, the Net.Works @Wales 2004 season kicks off with industry experts providing an update on the latest issues surrounding IP, at the Vale Hotel, Hensol, on the evening of Monday 2nd February.

Entitled "On the Case" and using real life case studies, the Patent Office will provide an overview of copyright law and its' application to companies developing software. This is followed by guidance from leading UK law firm Hugh James Solicitors who will discuss how companies can exploit and profit from their own Intellectual Property.

Dr Jeanette De Diemar of @Wales commented, "Digital media SMEs are often not as well equipped as larger players to adapt their businesses to the global and market realities of increased competition and emerging business opportunities.

"Both domestic and overseas markets present substantial opportunities for Welsh digital media companies to grow their businesses. This event will ensure they have a greater understanding of IP legislation and policy, along with direction on where to go for practical assistance."
